WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY?
A study based on data from the Bariatric Surgery Registry (BSR), a national registry that collects data on the safety and efficacy of various weight loss surgeries, was done in 2025 (it included all Bariatric Surgery from 2012 to 2021 in Aus)
Key findings include:
Metabolic bariatric surgery is safe and effective for substantial weight loss and health improvement.
The most common primary procedure was the sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
At 5 years, participants experienced significant total body weight loss (TBWL) following different procedures: one anastomosis gastric bypass (34.88%), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (30.73%), sleeve gastrectomy (26.5%), and adjustable gastric bands (17.6%).
90-day adverse events were recorded in 3.6% of procedures.
Among participants treated for diabetes at baseline, 71.6% no longer required medication at 1 year, and 61% no longer required medication at 5 years.
The authors concluded that metabolic bariatric surgery is safe, results in significant weight loss, and reduces the need for diabetes medications.”

This is for people that do not require urgent or dramatic loss - its the fastest to recover from and most common -
Alters the digestive system by creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting it directly to the small intestine, bypassing a large part of the stomach and the duodenum. This limits food intake and reduces calorie absorption.
This is for people that need a urgent and dramatic loss of weight
